Frequently Asked Questions...
What happens at a prenatal meeting?
The foundation of an empowering, positive birth experience is preparation. Across two in-person prenatal meetings, I meet you exactly where you are. Together, we focus on childbirth and postpartum education, learning and practicing comfort measures for labor, creating a personalized birth plan, and making space for any questions or emotions that arise as you prepare for birth.
Are doulas just for "natural" or home births?
No! Doulas support all types of births. In hospital settings, I act as a steady presence and experienced liaison between you, your partner, and your providers. I help translate clinical language, encourage you to ask clarifying questions of your care team, and support informed decision-making. I also provide physical and emotional comfort throughout labor, whether that’s during early labor or after you’ve received an epidural.
What happens at a postpartum meeting?
Birth is an intense physical and psychological experience. Within the first week after you give birth, we’ll meet to check in on your physical recovery, process any emotions that may be coming up, and address questions or concerns about caring for your newborn.
What if my birth runs very long?
Every birth unfolds on its own timeline. In the case of a very long labor, and to avoid burnout, I may bring in a trusted backup doula to give me a break so you can continue receiving consistent, attentive support.
Can you help me connect with other resources?
A key part of my role as your doula is connecting you with the information and resources you need. Whether that’s hospital or provider recommendations, childbirth education, prenatal yoga, or acupuncture, I help you explore your options. And if I don’t already have the answer, I’ll do the research and bring you thoughtful, evidence-based choices.
What is your doula personality?
In your birth space, I aim to be a confident and optimistic presence. Wherever and however you give birth, my goal is to help you feel safe, supported, and fully yourself. I encourage you to take up space, to move, to rest, to make noise, whatever helps you feel most comfortable and grounded. If you have a partner present, I support them in supporting you. Ultimately, my role is to offer the kind of care that best meets your needs.
